As Mukuru’s most significant community event/social forum, Mukuru Festival has come a long way since its launch in 2013.

Mukuru Festival was launched on 7th Dec 2013 as a one-day activity known as Mukuru Awards that focused on awarding change-makers in the community. Mukuru Awards will remain to be one of the main events at the Mukuru Festival. Mukuru Festival goes a strider ahead by maximizing on football matches, performances, art exhibitions and other showcases depending on partner organization for the year. Mukuru Festival has grown from just a one-day event to an 8 days festival.

In 2019, management and direction returned in-house to its founding organization, Mukuru Youth Initiative and about 10 more youth groups and organizations that will be managing different events around mukuru.

The festivals have always happened in Mukuru Kwa Reuben which is central, in 2018 different activities will happen in different parts of the community with at least 5 venues in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Viwandani and Mukuru Kayaba being used to enhance inclusivity.
