What does it mean to be ready for marriage?

Is there a right age to get married, or should readiness be determined by maturity, financial stability, emotional preparedness and the ability to take responsibility?

These were some of the questions that shaped the latest Coffee Bar Tuesday session at MuYI HUB, where 12 participants gathered for an open and candid conversation on relationships, marriage, personal goals, work and political leadership.

The discussion did not produce one answer. Instead, it revealed just how differently young people understand marriage and the role it plays in their lives.

Is There a Right Age to Get Married?

Participants offered different views on when a person should consider marriage.

Some suggested specific ages, with proposals ranging from the mid-20s for women to the late 20s or early 30s for men. Others argued that age should not be the determining factor, provided that a person is mature, financially stable, emotionally prepared and ready to take responsibility.

For some participants, financial stability was particularly important, especially for men. Others emphasized that the readiness of both partners and their willingness to agree on marriage should matter more than age.

One of the strongest ideas to emerge was that there may be no universal age for marriage.

Instead, participants identified maturity, emotional stability, responsibility, shared goals and the ability to handle conflict as more important considerations.

Marriage: A Choice or Something We Sometimes Fall Into?

The conversation became deeper when participants examined why people sometimes get married.

Marriage, they observed, does not always happen because two people deliberately planned for it. People can find themselves moving into marriage because of pregnancy, financial circumstances, convenience, comfort, family expectations or simply because a relationship has continued for a long time.

This raised an important question:

Are young people intentionally choosing marriage, or are circumstances sometimes choosing it for them?

Participants highlighted the importance of having conversations before marriage — including discussions about finances, children, sex, responsibilities, personal ambitions and expectations within the relationship.

The idea was simple: important conversations should happen before major commitments are made.

Does Marriage Affect Your Career and Goals?

Another major part of the conversation explored whether marriage strengthens or limits a person’s ambitions.

There was no consensus.

Some participants argued that marriage can make people more hardworking and responsible. Having a partner and family can create additional motivation to pursue opportunities and build a better future.

Others noted that marriage can sometimes make it more difficult to pursue personal ambitions, particularly when partners have conflicting priorities.

For some, the difference comes down to who you marry.

A supportive partner can help create an environment where both people grow. A relationship that lacks understanding and shared goals can have the opposite effect.

Participants therefore emphasized the importance of aligning goals before entering marriage.

One participant captured this through the idea of self-realization: a person should understand what they want to achieve in life so that their ambitions do not disappear simply because another person enters their life.

“Women Are Not Born to Suffer”

The discussion also touched on expectations placed on women within relationships and marriage.

One participant stated:

“Women are not born to suffer.”

The statement opened an important reflection on the need for relationships to be based on partnership, respect and shared responsibility rather than expectations that one person must endure hardship simply because they are married.

The conversation challenged the idea that marriage should automatically mean sacrificing one’s identity, ambitions or wellbeing.

What Makes a Marriage Work?

Participants repeatedly returned to three ideas:

Communication.
Maturity.
Shared responsibility.

Being in a relationship requires people to understand each other’s ambitions, weaknesses and expectations. Marriage, participants argued, should not mean abandoning personal goals but finding ways to align them.

The question therefore becomes less about “When should I marry?” and more about:

“Am I ready for the responsibilities that come with marriage, and am I choosing a partner with whom I can build the life I want?”

Can Marriage Shape Political Leadership?

The conversation took an interesting turn when participants connected relationships and marriage to leadership.

Some argued that marriage and family life can help develop resilience, patience and the ability to handle pressure — qualities that are important in leadership.

The argument was that leaders deal with stress, disagreements, competing interests and difficult decisions. Learning how to navigate challenges within personal relationships can potentially contribute to emotional resilience.

One participant put it strongly:

“You need a thick skin in leadership by having a thick skin in your marriage.”

Others argued against this view, pointing out that being married does not automatically make someone resilient or a better leader.

Another participant challenged the assumption that marriage necessarily guides leadership, emphasizing that leadership ability comes from a much broader set of experiences and personal qualities.

This disagreement was important because it demonstrated that there is no single formula for good leadership.

Should Politicians Marry Politicians?

The conversation even reached the question of whether people involved in politics should consider partners who understand the political environment.

Some suggested that marrying someone who is also involved in politics could provide greater understanding of the pressures and demands that come with public leadership.

But again, the underlying question was less about occupation and more about understanding.

Can your partner understand your ambitions?
Can they handle the pressure that comes with your work?
Can you support each other without losing yourselves?

These questions may matter more than whether both partners work in the same field.

Lessons for Young People

The Coffee Bar conversation ultimately moved beyond marriage itself and became a discussion about self-awareness, responsibility and the choices young people make about their futures.

Marriage should not necessarily be viewed as the end of personal development. Neither should being single be viewed as a failure or something that must be corrected by a certain age.

Participants suggested that young people should take time to understand themselves, establish their goals and have honest conversations with potential partners before making lifelong commitments.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of preparing for relationships rather than simply preparing for weddings.

The Bigger Question

There was no final answer to the question of the “right” age to marry.

And perhaps that was the point.

For some, the right time may be in their mid-20s. For others, it may be their 30s or later. Some may choose marriage earlier, while others may decide that marriage is not their immediate priority.

What mattered most to participants was readiness.

Readiness to communicate.
Readiness to take responsibility.
Readiness to handle conflict.
Readiness to support another person’s dreams.
And readiness to remain committed to your own purpose.

As the discussion demonstrated, who we choose to build our lives with can influence how we work, how we pursue our ambitions and even how we understand leadership and society.
