Coffee Bar Tuesday 28th May : United Against the Tide: Mukuru’s Fight for Resilience and Recognition
Blog Post: Understanding the Impact of Floods and Demolitions in Mukuru
During our recent Coffee Bar Tuesday session, held outside the MUYI HUB around a bonfire, we delved into the urgent issue of flooding in Kenya, focusing particularly on Mukuru. This area has been severely affected by heavy rainfall, leading to devastating consequences for its residents.
Effects of Floods and Demolitions
The persistent floods in Mukuru have caused significant displacement, loss of lives, and destruction of homes and infrastructure. Economic activities have also been severely disrupted. The situation is compounded by poor urban planning, inadequate drainage systems, and ongoing demolitions, which the government claims are necessary to remove structures encroaching on riparian land.
Causes of Floods
- Heavy Rainfall: Intense and prolonged rains.
- Poor Drainage Systems: Inadequate infrastructure to manage excess water.
- Improper Urban Planning: Settlements in flood-prone areas.
- Demolitions: Government actions to clear encroachments exacerbate the issue.
Youth Perspectives
Many young people at the session shared personal stories of how floods have impacted their lives. One participant highlighted the need for the government to improve drainage systems and compensate affected individuals.
Impacts of Floods
- Loss of Life: Tragically, floods have claimed many lives in Mukuru.
- Property Damage: Homes, businesses, and infrastructure have been extensively damaged.
- Displacement: Thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes, leading to temporary or permanent homelessness.
- Disruption of Services: Essential services such as water, electricity, and transportation have been disrupted.
- Psychological Impact: The stress and trauma from floods have profound effects on individuals and communities.
Ways to Avoid Floods and Demolitions
- Early Warning Systems: Use technology for timely alerts to residents.
- Proper Drainage: Prevent construction on drainage paths.
- Garbage Management: Implement effective waste disposal systems.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Invest in levees, floodwalls, and stormwater systems.
- Green Infrastructure: Use permeable pavement, green roofs, and rain gardens.
- Community Education: Raise awareness about flood risks and preparedness.
Concerns Raised
During our discussion, several important concerns were raised by the attendees:
- Lack of Unity: Unlike Mathare and Kibera, Mukuru struggles with unity, which has impacted the community’s ability to resist demolitions effectively. An example was given of Mukuru Kingstone, where a local factory attempted to use government demolitions as a cover to demolish homes along its wall. This attempt was successfully resisted by the community, highlighting the importance of solidarity.
- Media Attention: Mathare’s strong presence on social media and connections to international media, such as CNN reporter Larry Madowo, helped bring global attention to their plight. Mukuru, in contrast, has not received the same level of media focus.
- Leadership and Responsibility: The discussion emphasized the need for Mukuru’s leaders to advocate more strongly for the community. Additionally, residents were urged to be responsible citizens, ensuring they contribute to solutions rather than problems.
Conclusion
As the Coffee Bar Tuesday session concluded, many young attendees left with a newfound understanding of how floods and demolitions affect their community. Floods are complex natural phenomena with far-reaching impacts on society, the economy, and the environment. Effective flood management requires a comprehensive approach that considers both short-term emergency response and long-term strategies for prevention. By working together, pushing for accountable leadership, and being responsible citizens, we can build resilience in our communities and create a safer, more sustainable future.
