I am Waweru Denis also known as Weche, I was born and raised in Mukuru and started my family here and it’s a place I call home.

Overtime, I have been engaged in various activities in the community including ; community mobilization, community initiatives such as feeding programs, helping youth to form youth groups, helping the county in water distribution, Kazi Mtaani, educating and sensitizing the community through social media, events, art and music.

Mukuru Youth Initiative (MuYI) has been engaging the community and specifically young people in creating awareness, informing and educating the community through art activities that I have engaged in and it’s an opportunity that I am grateful for.

Through the annual Mukuru Festival in 2019 organized by MuYI, I was crowned MR Mukuru 2019, this helped me get even more recognition in the community. After Covid19 hit in 2020, I became a community champion and engaged in doing community sensitization and currently am using social media to create awareness, inform and educate the community on Covid19.

Before covid19 I was also running my movie shop business which I run to date where at times when I am not engaged with community work, I sell movies and also second hand clothes for kids. Am happy I have created employment for my fellow youth by having him in my business

Through my community work I was selected as a board member in the Lunga Lunga Health Centre Health Committee representing the youth. This gave me an opportunity to interact more with the community members and also government officials. Through my representation, I was also appointed as a committee member for the National Government Hygiene Program known as “Kazi Mtaani’ in Lunga Lunga.

I am a lover of art especially music and dance where I was also featured on a musical project in 2020 under the ACT Project and Tupumue Projects.

Am a believer of change and I want to see this achieved in my community and despite young people being stereotyped and working with the elderly to solve community issues makes you underrated, I still believe in young people. There is also another problem where most of the time the community wants you to volunteer in everything without consideration of your welfare.

As a young person I would like to urge fellow young people to never give up and they should position themselves for opportunities since there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Mukuru Youth Initiative (MuYI) is seeking a professional and motivated individual to join its team for a Project Manager (PM), based in the Nairobi, Mukuru Kwa Reuben, MuYI HUB.

Mukuru Youth Initiative (MuYi) focuses on youth empowerment through civic engagement, social enterprise, and artistic expression. Since establishment in 2015, MuYi has created a robust and supportive network for local creatives and passionate youth leaders. The MuYi hub in Mukuru Kwa Reuben slum, in Nairobi-Kenya, provides a free meeting space for youth to learn. The outreach of Mukuru Youth Initiative expands beyond Kwa Reuben into neighboring Mukuru informal settlements of Kwa Njenga, Viwandani, and Kayaba. Additionally, MuYI facilitate engagement between youth, the local administration and leadership, teaching young people how to use their voices in the decision-making process.

The project manager will act as the point person on assigned projects and is expected to work closely with upper management to ensure that the scope and direction of each project is on schedule. The project manager will act as the bridge between upper management and the departments tasked with the actual execution of a project. This role will define project scopes, determine available resources, estimate time commitments, and monitor and report progress.

As we wait for scientists and healthcare professionals to develop a vaccine for COVID-19, there is another, more readily available tool at our disposal.

Social distancing, defined as measures taken to reduce physical contact, is the first line of defense for containing an infectious disease like COVID-19. That’s because these infections spread when people cough, sneeze, or touch surfaces on which the virus resides.

To help us grasp the impact these measures can actually have, today’s infographic illustrates how a reduction in social exposure can theoretically contain the spread of infection.

We All Have a Part to Play

With the global number of COVID-19 cases still rising, many governments have issued quarantine orders and travel bans.

The math supports these decisions—reducing our physical contact with others, even when we aren’t experiencing any symptoms, is crucial. Studies like the one summarized above also prove that taking action sooner, rather than later, can go a long way in reducing the spread of infection.

The key takeaway from all of this? Social distancing is a powerful disease control tool, but only if we all participate.

People of all ages CAN be infected by the coronavirus. Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.

☀ The coronavirus CAN be transmitted in areas with hot and humid climates

🌡 Thermal scanners CAN detect if people have a fever but CANNOT detect whether or not someone has the coronavirus

💦 Spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body WILL NOT kill viruses that have already entered your body

💉 Vaccines against pneumonia, such as pneumococcal vaccine and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine, DO NOT provide protection against the coronavirus.

👃 There is NO evidence that regularly rinsing the nose with saline has protected people from infection with the coronavirus.

🧄 Garlic is healthy but there is NO evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the coronavirus.

💊 Antibiotics DO NOT work against viruses, antibiotics only work against bacteria.

🧪 To date, there is NO specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the coronavirus.

What is COVID-19? 

COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus. ‘CO’ stands for corona, ‘VI’ for virus, and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as ‘2019 novel coronavirus’ or ‘2019-nCoV.’ The COVID-19 virus is a new virus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and some types of common cold.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19? 

Symptoms can include fever, cough and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia or breathing difficulties. More rarely, the disease can be fatal. These symptoms are similar to the flu (influenza) or the common cold, which are a lot more common than COVID-19. This is why testing is required to confirm if someone has COVID-19.

How does COVID-19 spread? 

The virus is transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets of an infected person (generated through coughing and sneezing). Individuals can also be infected from and touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and touching their face (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth). The COVID-19 virus may survive on surfaces for several hours, but simple disinfectants can kill it.

Who is most at risk? 

We are learning more about how COVID-19 affects people every day.  Older people, and people with chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, appear to be more at risk of developing severe symptoms.  As this is a new virus, we are still learning about how it affects children. We know it is possible for people of any age to be infected with the virus, but so far there are relatively few cases of COVID-19 reported among children. This is a new virus and we need to learn more about how it affects children. The virus can be fatal in rare cases, so far mainly among older people with pre-existing medical conditions.

What is the treatment for COVID-19? 

There is no currently available vaccine for COVID-19. However, many of the symptoms can be treated and getting early care from a healthcare provider can make the disease less dangerous. There are several clinical trials that are being conducted to evaluate potential therapeutics for COVID-19.

How can the spread of COVID-19 be slowed down or prevented?

As with other respiratory infections like the flu or the common cold, public health measures are critical to slow the spread of illnesses. Public health measures are everyday preventive actions that include:

✓ staying home when sick;

✓ covering mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of used tissue immediately;

✓ washing hands often with soap and water; and

✓ cleaning frequently touched surfaces and objects. As we learn more about COVID-19 public health officials may recommend additional actions.

Kuwa Freshi Campaign.

Kuwa Freshi is a campaign by Mukuru Youth Initiative (MuYI) in partnership with Oxfam Kenya that is meant to raise awareness of cholera and promote prevention in Mukuru and around Kenya.

Mukuru Youth Initiative is a youth art organization within Mukuru slums; MuYI uses art to advocate for different issues affecting the community.

Objective: Create awareness on Cholera, its symptoms, prevention and what to do in case you suspect of being infected this is to reduce or eradicate any outbreak or spread of the disease.

Expected Accomplishments

EA1: Better understanding of preventive measures to avoid cholera outbreaks and create awareness of the symptoms of the disease.

EA2: Improved rapid response in case of detection of any cholera cases and avoid the spread of the disease.

Main activities

A1.1 Produce a song and a music video creating awareness around prevention, symptoms and response/referral mechanism.

A1.2 Produce mural creating awareness around prevention, symptoms and response/referral mechanism.

A1.3 Create a social media campaign on Facebook and twitter to promote the material and create more awareness.

A1.4 Organize road side video showcases with a Go-Around truck in Mukuru to promote the messages in 4 Mukuru Settlements

A1.5 Organize for a grand concert that will pull people from both Mukuru and outside to create a bigger buzz around the campaign.
