    First Public Space Within Mukuru

    On February 1, 2024, in collaboration with Kounkuey Design Initiative Kenya (KDI Kenya), we proudly introduced the inaugural public space within Mukuru Kwa Reuben, named the Mukuru Riverfront Public Space. This holds significant importance for us as an organization dedicated to create a community that interacts and protects with nature. How did this journey start? The journey began in November 2022 when, alongside KDI Kenya, we initiated the search for a suitable location for a public space along the Ngong River which is a tributary of Nairobi River within Mukuru.

    Despite months of scouting and challenges such as ownership constraints and budget limitations, we identified a drainage area adjacent to Bridge International Academy. This spot played a crucial role in the flooding of the area, impacting the school’s functionality and tenant’s access. The Mukuru Riverfront Public Space not only addressed the flooding issue but also complemented an ongoing project at the Bridge school which aimed at addressing flooding within the school and surrounding area.

    In a unique approach, together KDI Kenya engaged in a co-creation process with the community, involving both teams to envision the public space collaboratively. This vision was then translated into a design by the lead designer, and the project ran concurrently with the Sustainable Design Academy, where students played a vital role in its completion.

    The Sustainable Design Academy equipped participants with environmentally restorative design principles, using Minecraft as a tool for envisioning and creating spaces. The co-creation process involved input from various community members, including landlords, tenants, leaders and children. Construction of the public space commenced, with priority given to those who attended the workshops, providing employment for over 300 rotational workers.

    The launch of the Mukuru Riverfront Public Space was attended by local organizations, leaders, the Bridge International Academy leadership, religious figures, and community members. Member of the County Assembly, Scholastica Muthoni, emphasized the importance of partnerships for community development. Since its initiation, the project has generated employment and features a children’s play area, meeting shade, trees, a bridge, seating areas and drainage to mitigate flooding.

    Our executive director urged residents to protect the public space, emphasizing the need to prevent vandalism and expressed gratitude to KDI for choosing Mukuru Youth Initiative as their implementing partner. Community associate Kazia Ojal acknowledged the project’s challenges but praised stakeholders for their support. The MCA interacted with residents, highlighting the significance of partnerships for community development.

    As Mukuru Youth Initiative, we are privileged to have played a key role in addressing environmental, social, drainage, educational, and flooding concerns in Mukuru Kwa Reuben. We want to extend special thanks to KDI Kenya, UN-Habitat, Sustainable Design Academy, Bridge International School, local administration, the construction team, local organizations, the community and everyone involved in making the Mukuru Riverfront Public Space Project a success. The launch signifies not just the end but a new beginning for Mukuru Kwa Reuben.

    Femicides, Who Do We Blame?

    How did we get to killing each other? Who should we hold accountable for the ongoing rise of femicide cases and who is not playing their role well? These were some of the guiding questions for our Coffee Bar Tuesday discussion. This was also a pick up from last week’s discussion where we shared on what could be the reason why our women are being butchered day in day out and we are yet to get any statement from the government.

    Examining the four femicide cases that unfolded in January alone, it became evident that a systemic failure was at play. An alarming case brought to light was that of Scarlet Wahu, where prior victims had reported the perpetrator, John Matara, to various police stations. Shockingly, these reports went unaddressed, leading to the tragic loss of Scarlet Wahu. This raised the critical question: if the authorities had acted on previous reports, could she still be alive today?

    Participants were able to share where the blame should be directed to which includes Kenyan government, security agencies, society, families, men, women and even friends. The societal aspect has surfaced as a major catalyst for the escalating femicide cases. The existing social construct, frequently relegating women to subordinate roles and fostering power imbalances within families, was pinpointed as a breeding ground for the emergence of these heinous acts.

    “We have been socially constructed to believe that women are powerless and men should always lead the way creating power imbalances between different families.” Participant shared

    Families were also not left out as some participants argued that a lack of love and support within familial circles could drive individuals to seek validation elsewhere, often falling prey to exploitative and dangerous influences. This perspective sparked mixed reactions, with some attributing family dynamics as contributing factors to unthinkable actions. Looking at some of the victims do come from well-off families meaning money was never a contributing factor.

    Social construction is also something that stood out during the discussion. We have been socially constructed that women should always come second in everything and their say is not as important as it should be. This results to backlash when a woman raises their voice on something. Additionally, societal expectations dictate that men should portray strength even in moments of vulnerability, potentially leading to harmful coping mechanisms that result to harming others.  

    As a key takeaway, participants emphasized the need to treat everyone as human beings first, advocating for equal treatment. The constitution’s right to life must be upheld and protected by the government. The government agencies must also play their role accordingly: if someone reports something they should be able to follow up ASAP. We also need clear policies that regulate some of these contributing factors and at the end men should stop killing women and there’s no justification for killing anyone. See you on Tuesday!

    Self Esteem – High Or Low?

    Our behavior, reactions, speech, and even our actions are often closely tied to our self-esteem. What affects our self-esteem can vary from person to person, and it can fluctuate over time. This week’s #CoffeeBarTuesday revolved around the topic of cultivating a healthy self-esteem. Extensive research has consistently shown that self-esteem has a direct impact on our overall well-being, particularly when it comes to children in their formative years.

    We recognized that self-esteem can generally be categorized as either low or high. In simple terms, self-esteem is the measure of how we perceive and value ourselves. It is rooted in our own beliefs and opinions about ourselves, which can be challenging to alter. The discussion began with a guiding question from the moderator, inquiring whether participants considered themselves to have low or high self-esteem. Out of 21 participants, 12 acknowledged having low self-esteem, while 5 reported having high self-esteem. An additional type of self-esteem was revealed during the conversation, one that relies on the use of drugs, substances, or external pressures and circumstances.

    Low self-esteem can often be attributed to various life events or experiences, such as being bullied, facing discrimination, enduring stigma, job loss or employment struggles, difficulties at work or in education, physical and mental health issues, relationship challenges, separation or divorce, financial or housing problems, concerns related to appearance and body image, and the pressure to meet unrealistic expectations, often perpetuated through social media.

    One participant shared her personal experience of having a strained relationship with her mother, where her mother failed to offer support or encouragement for her endeavors. This constant criticism and lack of support greatly impacted her self-esteem. She emphasized that her self-praise was always tainted by self-doubt and self-hatred, stemming from the lifelong feeling of inadequacy. Her mother’s constant scolding and demotivation played a significant role in shaping her self-esteem.

    She used to scold me on anything; she never even encouraged me to do anything or even congratulated me. She always finds a reason to either scold me or demotivate me.

    The discussion also touched on identifying signs of high self-esteem, which includes acting assertively without feeling guilty, being comfortable in communication with others, focusing on the present rather than dwelling on the past, seeing oneself as equal to others without an inflated or diminished sense of self-worth, embracing challenges and risks for personal growth, and handling criticism without taking it personally, recognizing that personal growth is separate from the opinions of others. Effective self-communication, without fear of expressing likes, dislikes, and feelings, was also highlighted.

    Many participants highlighted how financial instability and the lack of a defined social class can impact self-esteem. One participant explained how not having financial resources can hinder one’s ability to approach people and opportunities. However, it was emphasized that believing in oneself and accepting one’s true self are crucial factors for success, healthy relationships, and overall happiness. Self-esteem plays a pivotal role in leading a fulfilling life by instilling the belief in our abilities and the motivation to pursue them, ultimately fostering a positive outlook on life.

    Condoms or PrEP? Which Way For Young People?

    Are young people aware of the various contraceptive options available to them? Are these contraceptives easily accessible and readily available? Building on our previous discussion from last week, our recent Coffee Bar Session was dedicated to bridging the gap between contraceptives and PEP and PrEP awareness. During the session, the moderator posed a crucial question: how many are familiar with the distinctions between PEP and PrEP? Surprisingly, the majority admitted to having never heard of these medications and was unsure how they work.

    Our discussion began by acknowledging that most contraceptives, except for condoms, do not protect against HIV/AIDS or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Contraceptives primarily serve to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Some participants expressed concerns that providing teenagers with contraceptives at an early age might encourage them to engage in sexual activities. However, it remains a fact that many young people are already engaging in unprotected sex, with or without access to contraceptives.

    Currently, Kenya faces a shortage of condoms, exacerbated by shrinking donor funding, resulting in a scarcity of free condoms. Sadly, retail prices for condoms have increased, making safe sex more expensive. Various stakeholders, including the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), have warned of a potential surge in preventable HIV outbreaks, STIs, and unplanned pregnancies, especially among young people and vulnerable populations, due to the ongoing condom shortage.

    Condoms have been categorized as medical devices rather than medical supplies, which has led to a 16 percent added tax. Consequently, most condom dispensers that previously provided free condoms are now unable to do so. Even our organization, Mukuru Youth Initiative, has been affected, as our dispensers no longer have condoms. As a safe space for young people, we used to distribute free condoms to 15 to 20 people daily, often providing an entire box per day. This shortage means that young people are forced to seek alternatives, engage in unprotected sex or choose abstinence.

    One participant shared, “I never knew there are medications that some can take for the prevention of HIV. I only knew abstinence and condoms as the only ways to avoid getting HIV.”

    What is PrEP?

    PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. It is a medication taken to prevent HIV transmission and infection before potential exposure. To start PrEP, one must first test negative for HIV. When taken consistently, PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection by up to 99%. PrEP requires daily use and is available with a prescription. It is particularly crucial for individuals at high risk of contracting HIV during sexual activity, such as men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, and people with HIV-positive partners.

    What is PEP?

    PEP stands for post-exposure prophylaxis. It consists of a short course of HIV medications prescribed to individuals who have been exposed to the virus. Unlike PrEP, which is designed for preventing HIV infection before exposure, PEP is taken after potential exposure. PEP should be initiated within 72 hours after potential exposure and typically lasts for 28 days or longer.

    During our discussion, we emphasized that PrEP should only be taken by individuals at risk of HIV infection, including those with multiple sexual partners, men who have sex with men, and individuals with a history of STIs in the last 6 months. If you have tested negative for HIV and believe that PrEP is suitable for you, you should visit the nearest health center. However, it is essential to recognize that the majority of young people are at risk of HIV infection. We must use all available platforms and mediums to encourage young people to protect themselves from contracting the virus. See you on Tuesday!

    Between Your Phone And Relationship, Which Comes First?

    Imagine a world where mobile phones were never invented. These devices have seamlessly integrated into our daily lives and become a basic necessity, enabling us to stay in closer touch with family and friends. The countless advantages they offer often go unnoticed. This week’s Coffee Bar Tuesday discussion centered on how mobile phones impact our relationships. The thought-provoking question was whether, given the choice, one would prioritize their relationship or their mobile phone.

    A total of 38 participants engaged in the discussion, and the majority expressed their preference for prioritizing their relationships over their mobile phones, citing various reasons. They emphasized that phones should serve as a means of communication and nothing more. Trust in their partners played a significant role, leading them to believe that their phones should not come between them. Participants pointed the importance of setting boundaries in relationships and recognized the need to prioritize human connections over digital devices.

    On the other hand, some participants argued in favor of their phones, considering them sacred and incomparable to anything else. They highlighted the fact that they had their phones before their relationships; no relationship should touch on their phones. However, the general consensus leaned toward valuing relationships over phones, as the irreplaceable emotional connections and vibes from partners hold more significance than any material possession.

    “Phones are replaceable but some of the vibes you get from your partner are irreplaceable. But if you want premium tears, just touch my phone. “One participant said

    Participants acknowledged that the decision between a phone and a relationship could vary depending on the nature of the relationship itself. Marriage, for instance, held a different level of commitment compared to a casual “situationship.” They reasoned that their choice might differ accordingly. One participant shared that they wouldn’t prioritize their phone in a situationship but prioritize the relationship in a marriage status, emphasizing the importance of understanding the unique dynamics in each scenario.

    During the discussion, a thought-provoking question was posed by the moderator: If your partner spent the entire day with your phone, would your relationship still stand? The responses varied, but one participant humorously remarked that touching their phone might lead to “premium tears.”

    “I cannot delete my past because you came to my life. You shouldn’t just judge because of my past but rather work on building our relationship together. Looking at my phone is looking for premium tears” Participant added.

    The conversation also touched on the idea that our society places a significant emphasis on protecting the privacy of our phones. People hold personal secrets within their devices, and the notion of someone invading that privacy raises concerns. However, this issue often arises from past experiences, trust and at times curiosity.

    Ultimately, the discussion emphasized that while keeping one’s phone private is acceptable, the foundation of a successful relationship lies in mutual understanding and trust. By nurturing a strong bond with your partner and understanding their needs, the allure of the phone diminishes. When trust and communication thrive, the need to delve into each other’s devices becomes less relevant. See you Tuesday!

    How Do You Manage Expectations In A Relationship?

    Have you ever wondered if your expectations in a relationship are too high or even too low? We all begin a relationship with expectations of being treated with kindness, love, affection, dignity, respect and so much more. But is that the reality? This week’s Coffee Bar Tuesday, we focused on what to do if your expectations are not met and how to manage them in a relationship?

    Your expectations in a relationship tell more about the other person and how serious the relationship is. Your expectations also answers questions such as is the person you are dating really the one? Is the person you’re dating serious about you, or should you leave the long-term relationship you’ve held onto. Your expectation should not tolerate any emotional or physical abuse. In the end, you expect your partner to be loyal and make a life together.

    With the discussion being led by young people who are usually the culprits of expecting more than the other party can deliver or fulfill. We started by asking, what do you expect in a relationship? Different people with different expectations, some of the expectations pointed out were respect, honesty, caring, love, empathy, support, someone being there for you, physical intimacy, clear communication, friendship among others.

    A participant highlighted how expectations can shape dynamics, influence tone, and cultivate a sense of safety and support within a relationship. Other participants felt that having to lower expectations will protect you from any misunderstandings or conflicts. It was also pointed out that any relationship with zero expectations is not a relationship but more of a friendship.

    Setting healthy and realistic expectations can keep you and your partner happy. It is unfair to burden your partner with too much than they can deliver. However, it is also good to have a few expectations that do not harm your relationship in any way. We have seen people losing track of being diagnosed with mental illness and disorders as a result of relationship break ups.

    “Most crucial expectation from my partner is support. Nowadays, we are in a relationship with someone but can’t even count the number of places or situations that they have helped you.” Participant Said

    It is only human to have certain expectations in a relationship but managing them is where the problem starts from. When it comes to managing expectations, the only way to go about it is through open and honest communication. Here are some of tips on how to manage expectations:

    • Communication and support: Good and clear communication is essential in any relationship. Being able to share what you expect from each other will help in understanding each other’s needs and building a strong bond.
    • Lowering your expectations: Having less or manageable expectations will save you from heartbreaks, emotional breakdown and even mental illness. Majority of us expect so much without thinking about the other person. 
    • Someone with the same energy; Relationships should be enjoyable, and partners should make time for fun, adventure, and new experiences together. This cannot happen if you two don’t have the same energy towards some things. 
    • Have reasonable expectations: You should not hold your partner or your relationship to unrealistic expectations. Your expectations should match what you can also deliver. I.e. It may be detrimental to the relationship to expect your partner to spend all their free time with you. 

    You will build a healthy relationship If both of you are open and willing to discuss your expectations from each other. You should be honest with your partner about the expectations you can meet and those that you will need more time to meet and that’s how you build a relationship together.     What’s Your Role In CIPD?

    That road, social hall, street light or ECDE we have been wanting will only come if it’s put in plan and budgeted for in the coming County Integrated Development Plan. This week’s #CoffeeBarTuesday focused on the County integrated Development Plan with participants from Mukuru Kwa  Reuben and Viwandani. What is CIDP, how is it developed and the different sectors that are there. It was shocking that in 15 people only 1 has an idea of what CIDP is or entails.CIPD is a plan prepared by all counties to guide development over a five-year period.

    The formulation of CIDP is the first major task of a new county administration and it aims to coordinate the work of both levels of the government in a clear plan to improve the quality of life for all the people. The plan contains information on investments, projects, maps, statistics, development initiatives and a resource mobilization framework. The County Governments Act, 2012 (CGA), 104 obligates a county to develop an integrated plan, designate planning units at all county administrative levels and promote public participation and engagement by non-state actors in the planning process.

    The CIDP also helps in the formulation of the County Annual Development Plan (ADP) which is an annual component of the 5-year CIDP and it highlights the short term priorities for the county.  It outlines the priority projects/programs for the county for the year.

    Through the discussion, we were able to cross check the Nairobi County CIDP 2018-2022 for both Mukuru Kwa Reuben and Viwandani together with Nairobi County Annual Development 2022-2021. We noted the plans indicated in the CIDP were diverse but didn’t touch on many sectors and others had repetitions. Some of the proposed projects include:

    • Rehabilitation of Katope road link to Police Post Simba Cool
    • Construction of link Rd from police to Lunga Lunga road, Kangana to Railway, and Riverside roads from bridge to Diamond
    • Construction of bridge link Kingstone
    • Lunga Lunga to DiamondSome of the priorities indicated to in the CIDP
    • Establishment of ECD centres
    • Creation of job employment through strategies such a training youth on entrepreneurship and building their capacity to access devolved funds among others
    • Construction of a health centre
    • Provision of waste collection and designation garbage storage points and regular collection of garbage.
    • Construction of bridges connecting Kware, Kwa Reuben to Lunga Lunga Road

    Viwandani

    • Old dysfunctional drainage system
    •  Upgrade existing health clinic to a 24- hour health centre
    • Overhauling of the entire drainage system within the ward
    • Re-carpeting of all feeder roads within the ward
    • Establishment of a rescue centre for survivors of GBV in Viwandani ward
    • Construction of a social hall in Viwandani Ward
    • Implementing of a programme to nurture sports talents while providing facilities, materials and equipment
    • Construction of a footbridge across Ngong River to facilitate access to Embakasi

    In Mukuru Kwa Reuben, there were 64 participants in attendance in the initial forum held on 30th August 2017 and 43 in attendance during the dissemination forum on 5th December 2017 while in Viwandani there were 54 participants in attendance in the initial forum held on 30th August 2017 and 95 in attendance during the dissemination forum on 5th December 2017. Comparing with other wards, this clearly shows that our communities were not well represented.

    Public participation has been a way of having our views and priorities taken to account but it has also been a challenge getting to these forums. Participants pointed out that public participation notice should be clear and transparent in order to accommodate the majority of the residents. In the last couple of years, notices were shared late or the venues were changed on the actual day.

    From 2018-2022 CIDP evaluation, it clearly shows that the majority of the projects were not done or were not completed. This coming CIDP will give us a good platform for proposing either new projects or asking for completion of the already stuck projects. However, we must note the projects will only be prioritized and put in the plan if we attend the public participation forums. In this coming CIDP, we must be part and parcel of the formulation and we must make sure that our priorities as a community are noted and put in the plan. See you on Tuesday!

    Is Gender The New Agenda In 2022 General Elections?

    “Women are being chosen as running mates on matters of inclusivity and not their leadership skills or what they are bringing at the table” Participants said

    Coffee Bar Tuesday this week was discussing if gender is the new agenda in political space? With political leaders choosing their women as running mates, does this mean we are achieving the 2/3 gender principle? Does this also mean that women’s voices are now being taken seriously? 

    This was one of the most heated conversations that we have ever heard during a coffee bar. With 25+ participants, the majority felt that women don’t need to be running mates to anyone, they can be able to run for any presidential seat.

    7 of 24 participants felt that women are now being chosen as running mates because of their leadership skills, track record and their urge for better governance, 9 felt that women are being used as mobilization tool and won’t have any say when it comes to governance of this country while 4 felt that women were picked as a result of sympathy.

    “Wanawake wamelia sana, wacha tuwapatia hii top seat ndio wawache kulia sana” Participant said

    With examples of Wajackoyah choosing Justina Wamae as running mate, Reuben Kigame unveils Irene Kamau as his running mate, Raila Odinga choosing Martha Karua as his running mate, Moses Kuria picking Faith Mwaura as his running mate and William Kabogo settled on Esther Ndirangu means that women are being noticed at the high table. These are just examples of top candidates who have picked women as their running mates.

    Participants believe that top politicians choosing women as running mates have a hidden agenda. One of the hidden agenda is women being used as running mates in order to get votes from women.

    Trends & Insights for Africa (Tifa) released polls indicating that Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga is the most preferred presidential candidate at 39 percent after choosing Martha Karua as his running mate. Does this mean that many people will vote for a presidential candidate who has a woman as a running mate? You have the answer. 

    Participants felt that women running as running mates will be puppets as soon as they win the elections. This means that after getting the votes, the deputy president office will be another occupied busy office with no moves. Others may have been selected in order to gather sympathy votes from women. Participants also argued that most of the women have nothing they are bringing at the table apart from the sympathy votes. Is gender the new agenda that the political class is using to get votes?

    Others argued by the time someone is being picked as running mate, there is something the presidential candidate had seen in them.  They could perform even better than their male counterparts. The fact remains that choosing Martha Karua, Irene Kamau, Justina Wamae, Esther Ndiragu among others has given hope to our young girls that leadership is not patriarchal.

    Kenya is among countries with lowest proportions of female parliamentarians in East Africa with 23%. Efforts to implement the two-thirds gender have so far not beared any fruits. However, the efforts are coming into realization with more women having interest in politics and vying for various political seats. If any of them wins, we will have a new record of the first female deputy president. See you Tuesday!

    What Attribute Makes A Leader?

    When choosing/evaluating a leader, we all have attributes/ traits that we consider important when selecting them. During our weekly coffee bar Tuesday session, we discussed some of the common attributes that most of us look for when electing a leader. Not only do the attributes apply to political leaders but also to our homes, chamas, churches, organizations and other different spaces.

    Participants pointed out that there’s research done that indicates a good record, endorsement by someone popular, never been involved in corruption and gender are some of the most common attributes that they look for when evaluating and selecting their preferred leaders.

    “A good track record means that you will be able to control public office/ funds.” Participant said

    A good track record is an attribute that was supported by majority of the participants. Your track record portrays who you are and what you can be able to become in future in case you get power. With experience from elected leaders, someone with bad or tinted record has a high chance of not bringing change to the community.

    Corruption is a still serious threat to poverty, peace and democracy. Looking at the leaders who have graft cases, most of them are yet to be found guilty and also most believe it’s a political fight. This makes it hard for many people to make a choice considering they are not found guilty at the court of law. However, this was pointed as a crucial attribute when evaluating a leader.

    The Constitution Of Kenya in article 27(8) requires the state to take legislative and other measures to implement the principle of having not more than two-thirds of the members of elective or appointive bodies of the same gender. Ten years later, this is yet to be enacted. Representation of women in Kenya’s Parliament has been and remains minimal. Majority of the participants also noted that gender is something they look for when evaluating leaders. Others felt that women should be at the same level as women and the ground should be the same.

    Ethnicity remains a problem in Kenya. We may not agree that politics of this country are driven by ethnicity. Participants also felt that they would rather vote for some who comes from the same ethnic group as theirs than voting someone from another ethnic group. Others also felt that they would support someone who comes from another ethnic group.  Some researches indicates that ethnic divisions can have adverse effects on the economic and political stability of Kenya. However, ethnic divisions may be driven by factors other than ethnic bias alone.

    One thing that stood out during the discussion is the fact that we only have two tribes in Kenya which are rich and poor. This created room for reflection on how the inequalities works.

    Don’t for someone because they have been endorsed by a public figure, don’t vote for someone who has tinted track record, don’t vote for someone because they come from your tribe but vote for someone based on their ideologies, manifestos, what they stand for, their track record and also their networks. Considering that young people are the majority in this country, they can be able to bring any change that’s need. Additionally, women are also the majority meaning they can be able to support one of their own in any political seat. See you on Tuesday!

    Elections And Mental Health – Elections Stress Disorder

     “I have fear of what will happen after the voting, me and my mother almost died during the post election violence. They stopped our bus and asked which tribe we were and mom had to show her identification card. Were it not for our tribe, me and my mom would not be alive” said one participant

    If your candidate/s doesn’t win, what will happen to you? Do you think it will affect you mentally? How prepared are we mentally for the coming 2022 general elections? What can we do to make sure no matter the outcome of the elections, our mental state will still be stable? These are some of the questions that were discussed during the Coffee Bar Tuesday. 

    15 out 20 believe that the current state of politics has caused a lot of tension during this 2022 general election and some of the political class are likely not to concede defeat. With previous experience during elections, many are not sure of whether they will be violence after the elections. Regardless of whether you will note or not, the 2022 general elections are likely to trigger anxiety, stress, and other negative mental health symptoms.

    Currently, the majority of Kenyans are experiencing election stress disorder. There is a feeling that this election will divide communities and trigger anger and frustration than any other election in recent memory. Some of the signs and symptoms of election stress disorder include insomnia, concern, fear, frustration, anxiety, depression, pain, obsession with the news/updates, anger issues, withdrawal and social isolation during elections. However, this reacts differently to everyone.

    Post-election stress has become a larger issue than ever before driven by previous post violence experiences. There’s a lot of tension, many feel that the 2022 general elections will not be free and fair. Some of the participants also pointed out that as soon as they were done with voting, the results will be announced while they are on their way to upcountry. This represents so many Kenyans especially those living in the capital city and other towns.

    Many are those who won’t vote because they feel their vote won’t count, others won’t vote because they feel the direct tickets have snatched them their preferred candidate. This has a major effect on their mental health by making them feel like there will be no change for the next 5 years.

    There was a feeling that religious leaders are no longer playing their role well. Compared to previous elections, they were at the forefront of preaching peace but lately they have aligned themselves with the politicians. This is also causing distress among many congregations.

      “Nowadays religious leaders wameji allign na political class hadi instead of preaching peac eduring and after elections, wako busy kutushow who we should vote for” Participant said

    With election stress disorder, how can we be able to control it or make sure that we are safe mentally? Some of the ways raised during the coffee bar session include;

    • Limit news and your social media activity
    • Choose who to talk to and what to talk about
    • Be secure and safe
    • Get out of the polling station after voting
    • Accept the results and move on

    During party primaries, there were few cases of young people being paid to disrupt the party primaries. There are worries that these will be the same people who will be used to disrupt or cause violence during or after elections. The message is clear, no matter the state of the economy, no matter how broke you are, don’t be the reason why people will fight. Peace starts with you and your mental health should be a priority.     How Do You Sustain A Business?

    Have you ever asked someone how they manage to sustain a business? The answers given will confuse you more. Most of the answers are usually “Ni kujaribu tu” or “Ni Mungu tu”. Others will go ahead and tell you “it’s hard work” and “knowing what you want”. Does this mean there are no recipes for sustaining a business? Does this mean since my business died, I missed hard work?

    Our coffee bar session was able to create a space for people already in business and those who want to venture in business. The discussion was on how to sustain a business and some of the challenges business owners face on their daily basis. We hosted Willie from Vaa Kenya, who is a street fashion designer and has been in the field for the last 4 years. His business is among many businesses that were hit hard by the pandemic. However, he got a way to make sure that his business stands during the Covid19 pandemic.

    Sticking to your passion has been a challenge to many people in business. Willie pointed out that most people would want to open a kibanda to sell vegetables but because of the competition, the person would opt to sell something else. Most people were brought up knowing that kibanda or selling vegetables is a woman’s business. This makes it hard for those with passion to defect, forgetting that there is a market for everyone.

     “Tushajua kibanda ni ya mama nani, tailor ni kazi ya baba nani, tushajua hoteli ni ya baba nani. Hii inafanya hatuezi weka those businesses as young people. That’s why utapata vijana wengi hawafanyi jobs za vibanda.” Participant said

    Most participants contradicted the fact that your business should be motivated by your passion. Others argued that a business should be as a result of necessity of a product/service and not passion. However, your business or venture should be able to solve a problem.  You should be able to study the necessity of the product or services you want to sell to the people around you. It was also clear that people venture into business without understanding the market.

    Fear of the market is something that hinders many people venturing into business. The fear of bringing something new or something that already exists has been the cause for many dead businesses. Most people will not invest in a market where they don’t see the same product/s.

    Not being able to do something extra is also something that has killed many businesses. You’re selling the same product with 1000+ people, what would make customers come to yours leaving others? In running a business, you should always make sure you introduce or have something that will entice your customers. This could be packaging, offers and discounts, mode of delivery, good customer service, free delivery or at subsidized fee.  

    There’s freedom in running a business, you can decide what time to open or close or even when to open. As much as running a business comes with freedom, consistency is vital. Lack of consistency is something that came out loud. Most people want to open a business but they won’t open it every day making it hard for customers to come back.

    Family and friends could be the reason why your business would prosper or be closed. Most people close to us would take advantage of the business leading you to closing it. This was pointed out that most people don’t know or understand the need to have boundaries when it comes to business. Being able to set boundaries with your business would really help in sustaining it.

    “mama yako atakuja bila unga na bado ukose kumpatia? Utaamua aje kumpatia considering that anabeba faida na stock ya duka?” Participant said

    From the conversation, business is a good venture for discipline. It helps you to understand that you won’t make money if you don’t do something extra, you will lose customers if you don’t open your business daily, your business won’t survive if you don’t create a boundary between your business, friends and family, connect your passion to solving a problem through your product or service. Finally, business is not a walk in the park and sustaining it needs commitment, hard work and going the extra mile to make your customers happy. See you on Tuesday!

    Red Fags In A Toxic Relationship You Shouldn’t Ignore

    Relationships are always perceived to be a space where partners are happy and comfortable to be around each other, it is meant to be a safe space for the two individuals. However, this is not always the case. With the rise number of sexual and gender based violence, individual don’t understand what toxic relationship entails or they assume.  

    Toxic relationship is a term that we often hear, but what does it mean to be in a toxic relationship? What are some of the red flags to watch out for? Why do people continue staying in such relationships? These were the guiding questions during coffee bar Tuesday held at the MuYI Hub.

    If a relationship stops bringing you joy and instead consistently makes you feel sad, angry or anxious, and that your well-being is threatened, then it can be defined as being toxic. Views of toxicity in relationships however vary from one individual to another. These are some of the discussion areas that we had during the session where participants were able to identify insecurity, lack of support, lack of communication, physical, verbal and emotional abuse, being manipulative, lack of respect, lack of empathy as the major red flags in a relationship. If you also notice that your partner is jealous, competitive, and generally unhappy when you are doing well, then that’s a huge red flag

    “As much as people focus more on physical abuse, emotional and verbal abuse tend to have much more effect on a partner since it messes with a person’s self-esteem and confidence, which takes time to build up once again” said one of the participants.

    Despite people seeing these warning signs, some will still prefer to stay with a toxic partner because of various reasons such as: the benefits their family receive, poor background, presence of children, fear of starting over, religious beliefs and harsh judgement from society.

    “ When in a toxic relationship, a person starts to change and suddenly they do not seem happy as they used to, they stop doing things that they enjoyed before and they do not engage with family and friends as much as before” was a view that a participant in the session had

    Some people are fortunate enough to realize the red- flags early and leave the toxic partner while others end up facing consequences of staying. Toxic trends from toxic partners often cause feelings of low self-worth, helplessness, fear, anxiety and even depression. Severe cases such as murder and suicide have occasionally been reported due to abusive partners.

    Both men and women are usually victims of toxic relationships and they should learn how to speak out in case they are facing abuse from a partner, abuse in any way or form from a partner should not be tolerated, therefore no one should feel obliged to persevere such a relationship at the expense of their mental, emotional or physical well-being, it is never too late to walk away from a toxic partner.

    Remember, bravery is leaving a toxic relationship and knowing that you deserve better and letting go is an act of self-care. You shouldn’t have any justification of why you’re leaving a toxic relationship. See you on Tuesday!

    NG-CDF Is Not A Manifesto

    On 19th April 2022, we held our weekly coffee bar Tuesday discussing the role of National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) formally known as Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and how it’s being used a political tool. Through the discussions, most people pointed out NG-CDF not only is it used as tool to seek votes but also as a manifesto.  Most people are tricked in voting for someone because of something they received through the office or promises of what the office shall do.

    According to book, the NG-CDF should have a committee. The committee should at least have 10 people from the community – There should be representation of youth, women and people living with disability. The Member of Parliament should convene public forums to elect people from the elective wards. However, it’s noted that most of NG-CDF offices are composed with committees that either belong to the same party or are supporters of the Member of Parliament. 

    Member of Parliament is the patron of the NG-CDF but this has changed to them controlling the funds. An example given  – most of the bursaries given have pictures of the MPs which most participants felt it shouldn’t be like that since this is not their initiative.

    The NG-CDF should conduct public participation to understand what community priorities are. Most of the time, projects conducted by NG-CDF are usually not community’s priority.

    “Imagine a school getting a bus and they are not in a position to fuel it. The priority for that school should be a feeding program, desks or getting more classes.” Participant says

    The main aim of the discussion was to understand that NG-CDF is not a favor but its a right that you’re entitled to. No one should make you feel like they are doing you a favor because you’re getting a bursary, a road or a desk. It was also noted that the community is not aware of the money allocated in each financial year or how much is allocated to different sectors such as education, health, sports and arts infrastructure or disaster among others. 

    There’s still confusion on county and national government projects. It been noted there are projects that have double allocations from the county and national. The community doesn’t understand which projects should be conducted by county or national government. This makes it easy to embezzle money allocated to those projects. 

    But with all the loopholes noticed, what can we do?  

    • NG-CDF should not be used a manifesto
    • We should interact with NG-CDF office to understand how it operates,
    • We should not be enslaved because we got bursaries, desks, road or any help from office.
    • Understand the role of Member of Parliament on NG-CDF.
    • How we can hold the office accountable. 
    • To understand how much is being allocated to their constituencies (Check Out NG-CDF website)

    Do Direct Tickets From Political Parties Affect Us?

    Do you think direct ticketing is one way of political parties to stop us from exercising our democratic rights? Do you think direct tickets affects party members in any way? Do you think political parties primaries will free and fair?

    This week’s coffee bar Tuesday, participants felt that direct tickets diverts leader’s agenda to them serving their parties agenda. Most participants pointed out that most political parties will give tickets to those who fund or are likely to fund their campaigns. However, it’s noted that at times they get direct tickets through consensus or depending with popularity. Others felt that the direct tickets will not affect us in any way since we are nominating someone and not parties.

    “I have a feeling that party primaries will not be free and fair but there will be an improvement from previous party primaries. This is because parties are at risk of losing their party members in case the nominations are not free and fair.” Participant said

    Aspirants also have something to loose when it comes to direct tickets. All the ideologies and plans they had for community will be set aside and promote parties ideologies. For those who don’t get the direct tickets means they lose before they even get to nominations. Citizens should be given chance to nominate their preferred leaders.

    We have already started to notice some complaints from aspirants of places where direct tickets were issued. Issuing direct tickets mean some aspirants are being discriminated against and citizens are denied their right to nominate someone who fits or at least someone who can represent them during the general elections.

    At the end, we all agreed we should nominate someone based on their values and what they stand for and not voting them because they belong to a certain political party. It was clear that if we don’t nominate our preferred candidate, chances are the ticket will go to someone else who might not bring the change we need.

    As Mukuru Youth Initiative, we continue to create spaces where community can learn and unlearn through discussions, where community and citizens can understand their roles in decision making. It’s time for change and we all must play our part in influencing and bringing change. See you on Tuesday!

    Effects of Covid19 On Livelihoods in Mukuru

    “I now depend on my daughter for food and medication since I had to close down my hotel business.” Says Ann.

    When Covid19 hit Kenya in March 2020, no one foresaw the effects of pandemic on livelihoods. Many people were only worried and concerned about the rate of infections that were increasing on a daily basis. Few months later, curfews, lockdowns and social distancing were introduced as a way of controlling the infections. 

    It is with this that most of the companies/organizations had to retrench its workers to follow MOH guidelines on Covid19. A lot of people lost their jobs, others had to close down their businesses because of low productivity in the industries and even others lacked money to restock their businesses.

    Ann Munyao , 53, who was badly affected  by the pandemic, owned a hotel near one of the industries in Viwandani.  Most of her customers were retrenched from surrounding companies translating to not having the usual number of customers she was serving before.

    “ I had a hotel here in Lunga Lunga near the industries and that’s where I was  getting my income from before the pandemic,” I now depend on my daughter for my food and medication since I had to close down my hotel business. Says Ann. 

    During the project, mapping, registration and verification of beneficiaries from the vulnerable households was done in the whole of Mukuru;- Mukuru kwa Reuben, Kayaba, Kwa Njenga and Viwandani. Ann is one of the thousands of residents who benefited from Oxfam supported project -Tuko Pamoja in Mukuru. Supporting Mukuru residents was one of the activities in the project which entailed supporting residents with 3 bars of soap, dignity kits for 3 months and 4 jerrycans of water every day for 3 months. 

    Through the Tuko pamoja  (We’re in this together): project; a 12 Months  project implementation jointly by Oxfam Wash and Gender Teams in partnership with local based organizations in Mukuru and Korogocho informal settlements, more than 2000 residents of Mukuru have benefitted with NFIs – soap, dignity kits and water.

    Ann has a health condition that requires a lot of care and financial support for her medication. Most of her income she used to get was for hospital check-ups and buying medicines. With the support of the NFIs, she was able to direct that money to her medications.

    “Am really grateful for this project since the items I received, I shared with my grandchildren like sanitary pads and this has also reduced some of the household expenses, I would say the support from MuYi and Oxfam came at the right time.” says Ann.

    Many families are still struggling to get their lives back on track. Ann Munyao is one of the many residents in the community who find it hard to provide for themselves and ends up depending on their families or the well-wishers for support.  However, there’s hope that she will go back to her hotel industry soon.

    Provision Of Water And Basic Hygiene Items To Mukuru Residents.

    Jackline Mbangari is a mother of three kids, lives in Mukuru Kwa Reuben. She is one of the beneficiaries of the soap, water and dignity kit distribution through the E-voucher system under the Tuko Pamoja Project. Tuko Pamoja (We’re in this together): Project is a 12 Months project implemented jointly by Oxfam WASH and Gender Teams in Partnership with Local based Organisations in Mukuru and Korogocho informal settlements.

    Jackline now depends on casual jobs of washing clothes which she does twice a month. The little money she gets is not enough to cater for foodstuffs and other household needs. Jackline lost her job when she was released from work for maternal leave. After completion, she decided to go back to work but the employer didn’t allow her back just telling her to wait. Now it’s one year and a half but still no feedback.

    For 3 months, Jackline will be able to access 3 bar soap, 4 – 20 litres of water daily, and dignity kit containing 5 sanitary towels packets, 1 petroleum jelly, 4 tissues and 200g of washing powder monthly.

    ‘’Am grateful to OXFAM and MUYI for enabling me to be able to access water and dignity kit using the e-voucher system. Now I will be able to save up the little money I used to spend on buying water and soap putting it in other household needs.” She said.

     “I used to fetch water, that is far from where I live because the water is free, though it is salty but I still use it for drinking, cooking and washing but now through the program am now able to access fresh water for drinking and cooking.” She mentioned.

    Women and girls face a lot of challenges coming to their sexual reproduction health rights most of them not knowing their rights making them to be victims.

    She went ahead and added “Indeed, the items especially the dignity kit will help me a lot. I have two girls and it’s difficult for me to provide for them things like sanitary towels considering the cost of one packet being sold at shillings 80 and on my case I need 3 of them, but now for the next 3 months they will be able to access them and they will be confident during their menses. “

    “As for the system, it is a good way of ensuring that each targeted beneficiary gets their items with fairness and justice through receiving a unique voucher code.” she added.

     ‘’The vendors were well organised and served the community with the required number of items with per household. We hope that OXFAM will come up with another program so that we can benefit from it as beneficiaries from Mukuru Kwa Reuben.”

    The Tuko Pamoja project objective is to drive positive behavior change to prevent and contain the spread of COVID- 19 and reduce deaths and to protect the lives and livelihoods of survivors of SGBV.

    Top 5 Wealthiest Kenyans. Kenya Billionaire and Millionaire Wealth Tax: Revenue Estimates

    Using new data from Forbes and Wealth X, Fight Inequality Alliance, Patriotic Millionaires, Institute for Policy Studies and Oxfam have prepared estimates for what wealth taxes on the world’s richest people could raise. We have looked at $USD billionaires, those with $50 million dollars in wealth and those with $5 million dollars in wealth from 66 countries worldwide.  We modelled the annual revenue from an annual wealth tax of 2% for 5 million and above, 3% for 50 million and above, and 5% for $1 billion and above. Actual levels of wealth taxation would be agreed in each country, and these estimates are only indicative, but nevertheless, this shows just how much revenue could be raised.

    Beyond the objective of raising revenue, it is also legitimate to use wealth taxation to fundamentally reduce the total numbers of billionaires and multi-millionaires. With this in mind, in line with the work of Gabriel Zucman, we have also modelled the revenue from a 10% annual wealth tax on the world’s billionaires, which would seek to steadily reduce the total number of billionaires in the world. 

    1.            The Super-Rich and the Pandemic

    There are 1,755 households with a net worth of $5 million (Kshs.567 Million) or more, with wealth totaling $37.1 billion (Kshs.4.2 trillion).

    There are 120 households with $50 million(Kshs.5.67 Billion)  or more with a combined wealth of $17.4 billion(Kshs. 1.97 Trillion).

    Between 2016 and 2021, the number of households with wealth over $50 million (Kshs.5.67 Billion)   increased from 80 to 120. Their combined wealth increased from $12.73 billion Kshs. 1.44 Trillion) to $17.4 billion (Kshs. 1.97 Trillion)., an increase of 36.8%, adjusted for inflation. 

    The five richest people in Kenya, as of November 30th, 2021, are:

    1. Sameer Naushad Merali, $790 million (Kshs.89.5Billion)  
    2. Bhimji Depar Shah, $750 million (Kshs.85 Billion)

     The two richest people have more wealth than 16.5 million Kenyans.

     3.      Annual Wealth Tax

     An annual wealth tax in Kenya would raise $900 million a year(Kshs.102 Billion)    (with rates at 2% on wealth over $5 million (Kshs.567 Million), 3% on wealth over $50 million(Kshs.5.67 Billion),  and 5% on wealth over $1 billion(Kshs.113 Billion),  ).

     A more progressive wealth tax would raise $1.1 billion(Kshs.124 Billion),   (with rates at 2% on wealth over $5 million(Kshs.567 Million), 5% on wealth over $50 million(Kshs.5.67 Billion) and 10% on wealth over $1 billion(Kshs.113 Billion).

     4.      Health Not Wealth: Impact of Revenue on Health Spending

     An annual wealth tax applied to the wealth of multi-millionaires raises approximately $900 million (Kshs.102 Billion)     a year, enough to increase the government health budget by 36% OR reduce households’ out of pocket health costs.

    How The Use Of The E-voucher System Has Impacted Lives In Mukuru.

    Tuko Pamoja (We’re in this together): Project; This is a 12 Months project implemented Jointly by Oxfam WASH and Gender Teams in Partnership with Local based Organisations in Mukuru and Korogocho informal settlements. The project objectives are :-

    • To drive positive behavior change to prevent and contain the spread of Covid-19 and reduce deaths.
    • To protect the lives and livelihoods of survivors of Sexual And Gender Based Violence.

    The project uses an e-voucher system whereby selected beneficiaries receive water, soap, and dignity kits from select shop vendors in the community. Registered beneficiaries get a voucher code through SMS on their registered phone lines and are supposed to visit the vendor for redemption. This process has made it easier for the vendor and the beneficiary by being transparent and ensuring the vendors know who and what to give out.

    Shadrack Mwema, a resident of Mukuru Kwa Reuben, was among the registered vendors in the TUKO PAMOJA PROJECT.

    According to Shadrack ‘the beneficiaries appreciated the water distribution because most of the families can’t afford to fetch water for 20 shillings per day thus forcing them to use salty water for drinking and cooking. Some families would fetch water then they pay later on when they have money and this was a challenge since most of the residents depend on casual jobs thus taking too long to pay.”

    He further mentioned that ‘’the system was transparent in that it enabled identified beneficiaries get a unique voucher code for water and so beneficiaries who were not targeted could not claim for water since one has to show his/her code before accessing the water.’’ He added “This system of issuing codes is unique and very transparent.”

    With the system being new to the vendor, there were some limitations that were experienced which were system related and also beneficiary related. He mentioned that ‘’as a vendor one needs to be patient when the system experiences delay in responding to successful redemptions’’. Sometimes the beneficiaries would receive the messages and delete them without knowing and hence claim that they have not seen messages on their phone and thus they come to the vendor to assist them in resending messages to get a voucher code.

    Apart from supporting the vulnerable community members, the system allows community-based structures and businesses to grow.

    Shadrack also recommended that ‘’if there is another chance, I would like to be considered as a vendor for the next project. He added ‘’We urge the donors to include more households since the issue of access to safe drinking water is a challenge to a lot of families”.

    Mukuru Youth Initiative is a youth founded and youth led community-based organization founded in 2013. We are located in Mukuru Kwa Reuben with our main office at the MuYI HUB, Opp Reuben Stadium. We are focused on social and economic well-being of Mukuru young people by engaging them in different social activities. Our main focus is to make sure that we have a community of youth who are empowered and engaged in relation to our three strategic objectives;

The position holder will work closely with the project Team, CHVS and community elders/committees to validate, respond and refer feedback received from the various feedback mechanisms established in MUYI programming. They will be working closely with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Accountability Learning Team to ensure adequate documentation and usage of data generated from the CRM. The accountability officer shall be in a 2 month contract.

    Roles and responsibilities of the Accountability Officer

     Daily updates of the complaints & feedback database, all the complaints and feedback received from all the channels available for use by the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries.

     Document all feedback received from the response mechanism, including actions taken into Oxfam’s approved database.

     Submit bi-weekly compiled complaints and feedback to Oxfam MEAL person for review.

     Channel complaints to the persons responsible for follow-up as per Oxfam standard beneficiary CRM procedures.

     Maintain consistent, confidential, and detailed records of all complaints in the COMPFU

     (and other electronic and hard copy filing systems, as appropriate) as well as enquiry reports (as relevant)

     Ensure the COMPFU is always password protected, the confidentiality of complaints data is respected, and the information is shared only with authorized persons as per Oxfam’s procedures.

     Support in the project site-based analysis and dissemination of clear specific CRM information/awareness raising materials in a language and visual format that can be widely understood by the community.

     Support beneficiaries by providing information to related services from Oxfam and other organizations.

     Maintain a proper filing system for all the complaints and feedback with filling codes.

     Conduct Information Provision & feedback sessions with beneficiaries.

     Work closely with the community leaders/committees to follow up and response on complaints received through referrals.

     Validate feedback and complaints received through different channels of CRM (specifically hotline), and ensure follow up and response on complaint.

    The story Of Hope – Weche

    I am Waweru Denis also known as Weche, I was born and raised in Mukuru and started my family here and it’s a place I call home.

    Overtime, I have been engaged in various activities in the community including ; community mobilization, community initiatives such as feeding programs, helping youth to form youth groups, helping the county in water distribution, Kazi Mtaani, educating and sensitizing the community through social media, events, art and music.

    Mukuru Youth Initiative (MuYI) has been engaging the community and specifically young people in creating awareness, informing and educating the community through art activities that I have engaged in and it’s an opportunity that I am grateful for.

    Through the annual Mukuru Festival in 2019 organized by MuYI, I was crowned MR Mukuru 2019, this helped me get even more recognition in the community. After Covid19 hit in 2020, I became a community champion and engaged in doing community sensitization and currently am using social media to create awareness, inform and educate the community on Covid19.


    Before covid19 I was also running my movie shop business which I run to date where at times when I am not engaged with community work, I sell movies and also second hand clothes for kids. Am happy I have created employment for my fellow youth by having him in my business

    Through my community work I was selected as a board member in the Lunga Lunga Health Centre Health Committee representing the youth. This gave me an opportunity to interact more with the community members and also government officials. Through my representation, I was also appointed as a committee member for the National Government Hygiene Program known as “Kazi Mtaani’ in Lunga Lunga.

    I am a lover of art especially music and dance where I was also featured on a musical project in 2020 under the ACT Project and Tupumue Projects.

    Am a believer of change and I want to see this achieved in my community and despite young people being stereotyped and working with the elderly to solve community issues makes you underrated, I still believe in young people. There is also another problem where most of the time the community wants you to volunteer in everything without consideration of your welfare.

    As a young person I would like to urge fellow young people to never give up and they should position themselves for opportunities since there is light at the end of the tunnel.

    Mukuru Youth Initiative (MuYi) focuses on youth empowerment through civic engagement, social enterprise, and artistic expression. Since establishment in 2015, MuYi has created a robust and supportive network for local creatives and passionate youth leaders. The MuYi hub in Mukuru Kwa Reuben slum, in Nairobi-Kenya, provides a free meeting space for youth to learn.     MuYI (Mukuru Youth Initiative) Using art to create awareness on Covid19

    Some time in December 2019, reports emerged that a strain of a coronavirus, never seen before in humans, had begun to spread among the population of Wuhan which is a large city in Hubei province, China, with a population of nearly 60 million people. In just a matter of months however, the virus has become a global pandemic such that even some of the most powerful countries like the United States and United Kingdom are overwhelmed by the virus’ effects.

    The novel coronavirus or rather covid-19, got it’s name based on the fact that it is a type of coronavirus that was discovered in 2019. Although the virus had been spreading at a very high rate in other continents, it took a while before it got to Africa. In Kenya specifically, the virus was absent up until 13th March 2020 when the first confirmed case was made public.

    COVID-19 has brought a lot of changes in our daily lives as it put to a stop some of our norms such as shaking hands, maintaining close contact with people and interacting with each other during various gatherings. Apart from that it has also introduced us to new terms such as quarantine, isolation, curfew and lock down that majority of the people were not familiar with before.

    I have witnessed a number of times how wananachi who fear that the country would go into a lock down have been panic buying for food stuffs and the now much-needed sanitizers in various supermarkets ,this could probably be as a results of the whispers on social media that the government is planning for a total lockdown, just my opinion though, but personally I think public anxiety is driven by four factors : infection, going broke, inadequate information and supplies running out.

    Never had it crossed my mind that a time would come whereby we would not enjoy the pleasure of freely walking into a supermarket or restaurant. As it stands, I, like many other Kenyans no longer have a social life like before. People are however coming up with interesting ways to keep themselves entertained as they remain cooped up in their home spaces. Social media is also playing a very important role of connecting people especially during these times of social distancing.

    Tiktok videos, live chats and memes have become a major part of our daily lives, not forgetting the anonymous messaging app (kubool) that has also been trending, people have also taken a liking to various board games and honestly I think all these have made the stay at home experience to be bearable and also maintained people’s mental health status because being locked up at home for hours on end with the threat of a terrible disease hanging on your head can drive you crazy.

    With the current trend of how the virus is spreading, it has sparked anxiety and concern among citizens as it has threatened to jeopardize various aspects of our lives such as our jobs, health and even social life. So far, there are numerous advisories the government is giving concerning the virus that they expect the public to take seriously and put in to action. These instructions would however be more meaningful if the “why’s ” could be clearly explained to people especially at the community level.

    As Mukuru Youth Initiative ( MUYI), we saw this existing gap in the society and started a corona virus awareness campaign dubbed the “kuwa freshi campaign”. This campaign is very significant especially to the residents of Mukuru as they will get reliable information and explanations to the “whys “. Why regularly wash hands with water and soap thoroughly? Why use sanitizers? Why not touch your face? Why self quarantine? Why stay at home? Why social distancing? These are usually the commonly asked questions that we will help to clarify to residents.

    Interaction with the campaign teams will help in combating rumors and misinformation. During the campaign, the people will also be made aware of the different emergency contacts that they can reach out to in case they experience any symptoms related to the virus. Mukuru residents will also be made aware that prevention is everyone’s responsibility and if one person breaks the chain then they tend to put themselves and others at high risk of contracting the disease.

    At the end of the campaign we expect the community members to be enlightened about COVID-19 thereby increasing the level of compliance to preventive measures and intern the spread of the virus will be mitigated to a great extent because after all, no individual can claim to be safe if the rest of the community isn’t.

    Mbona Social Distancing to Fight Coronavirus (Covid-19)?

    As we wait for scientists and healthcare professionals to develop a vaccine for COVID-19, there is another, more readily available tool at our disposal.

    Social distancing, defined as measures taken to reduce physical contact, is the first line of defense for containing an infectious disease like COVID-19. That’s because these infections spread when people cough, sneeze, or touch surfaces on which the virus resides.

    To help us grasp the impact these measures can actually have, today’s infographic illustrates how a reduction in social exposure can theoretically contain the spread of infection.

    Coffee Bar Mtaani: Building Bridges in Fuata Nyayo

    Last Tuesday, Coffee Bar didn’t just pop up, we pulled up with purpose. This time, it was Fuata Nyayo that got the mic. Deep in Nairobi South, where the vibes are raw, the stories run deep, and the fire for change still burns, that’s where we brought the conversation. No suits. No fluff. Just real people, real issues, and real solutions.

    From the moment we landed, the message was clear: listen first. And what we heard? Eye-opening. The air was thick with honesty. The stories? Unfiltered. The energy? Unmistakably hopeful.

    Insecurity came up fast not just as fear, but frustration. “It’s like no one sees us,” one young voice shared. But instead of staying in the struggle, the room pivoted to possibility. Enter: Mukuru Social Justice Centre. A name that kept surfacing as a potential powerhouse in restoring justice and dignity right here, where it’s needed most.

    Then came the spicy part: What kind of MCA do you want?

    The crowd didn’t flinch. They want a leader with mud on their boots, not just shine on their forehead. Someone who listens, walks with the people, delivers, and doesn’t go ghost after elections. Simple.

    When we touched on opportunities, the truth bombs kept dropping. One young person put it plain:

    “Some of us just want to be spoon-fed. But real change? You gotta show up for it.”

    Others called out the gatekeeping culture, the way chances are hoarded in tight circles and private chats. Enough is enough. The people said it loud: Opportunities should be fair, open, and for everyone.

    Then unity took the floor. The ideas? Electric. Teamwork, shared ownership, knowing each other’s strengths. And then one phrase stopped the room:

    “Do me, I do you.”

    That’s the spirit. Mutual support. Community accountability. Respect that goes both ways.

    But here’s the heart of it: it’s time we shift from a street mentality to a community mentality. No more waiting to be invited. No more acting like guests in our own stories. We’re already at the table. Let’s eat, build, and win, together.

    MuYI didn’t just bring Coffee Bar Mtaani to Fuata Nyayo for a one-time vibe. We came to light a flame, and pass the torch. We’ve opened the door, but the walk? That’s now in your hands.

    The vision? For the Nairobi Youth Network to take the reins and keep this thing alive. Weekly sessions. Consistent dialogue. Real conversations, real change. This can’t end when we leave, the fire must keep burning.

    Coffee Bar: ‘Blood Parliament Documentary’ Screening and Reflection — When the Silence Felt Too Loud

    On Tuesday evening, the room was quiet — not because there was nothing to say, but because we had just witnessed something that left us shaken. As the lights dimmed and the BBC Africa Eye documentary “Blood Parliament” played, the space at Coffee Bar transformed from a casual gathering to a collective reflection. A documentary meant to inform became a mirror. And no one left the same.

    The film took us back to June 25th, 2024 — a day burned into memory. The chants, the defiance, the blood. Students, shopkeepers, Sunday school teachers — ordinary Kenyans whose lives were cut short in a moment meant to redefine democracy.

    As the credits rolled, the conversation started. Slowly. Then all at once.

    Many participants confessed that watching the documentary reopened emotional wounds. Some shared that it brought back haunting memories of being on the ground during the protests. “It could have been me,” one said. Others sat in silence until they could finally say, “It still hurts.”

    Some felt the documentary succeeded in capturing the emotional weight of the moment, but lacked a solid call to action. Names like Rex Masai were painfully absent. “Where was the mention of those who became the faces of this revolution?” someone asked. “How do you spark a movement and then leave out its symbols?”

    A few felt the timing was right — a powerful reminder ahead of a crucial election cycle. But others felt it came too late, too clean, too… safe. “The revolution already happened. Where was BBC when the fire was burning hottest?”

    There were also sharp critiques of accessibility and reach. With most grassroots communities lacking smartphones or stable internet, some argued that the people most affected by the protest and its fallout may never even see the documentary. “It won’t reach the mama mboga who lost her son. It won’t reach the youth still healing in silence.”

    One participant boldly said what many had only implied: “At the end of the day, BBC is a business. They’re selling stories. Not justice.” Others questioned the choice of voices in the film. Why were some individuals featured who hadn’t been visible on the frontlines? Why weren’t the families of the deceased given space to speak?

    The fear was real. “I don’t think I’d march again,” one Gen Z participant said quietly. “This time, I watched the ambulances take away politicians while the wounded bled out. What’s the point?”

    The room was heavy. But it wasn’t hopeless.

    The conversation closed with a shared truth: our systems have failed us. The political class — regardless of side — has united in survival, not service. But so have we. In anger. In truth. In hope.

    Someone said it best: “Come 2027, we drain the swamp.”

    Coffee Bar isn’t about answers. It’s about awakening. And this week, we woke up to a reality many wanted to forget. Now that we remember, the real work begins.

    At MuYI, we believe that young people must have a voice in governance and advocacy. Our Coffee Bar sessions create a platform where the community, especially the youth, can engage in real conversations about governance, leadership, and civic participation. On February 25, 2025, we gathered once again at MuYI Hub to dissect one of Kenya’s most controversial political moves—the recent Raila-Ruto handshake. But was it really about unity, or just another backroom deal that left Kenyans out?

    Politics of Handshakes: Who Really Benefits?

    Kenyan politics is a cycle of deals made behind closed doors, leaving the people with promises but little action. The handshake between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto has reignited the debate: Is it about national unity, or just another elite arrangement that safeguards political interests while sidelining ordinary Kenyans?

    In our discussion, many participants felt that these handshakes have historically been symbolic, rather than transformative. The lack of transparency and public participation in these high-level agreements raises concerns. If governance is truly for the people, then why are the people always the last to know?

    Gen Z Is Wide Awake: The Rise of Political Consciousness

    Unlike previous generations, today’s youth are no longer passive spectators. The streets are louder, the conversations sharper, and Gen Z is demanding accountability. This isn’t 2007, 2013, or 2018—young people today are equipped with information, mobilization tools, and the courage to challenge the status quo. The Coffee Bar session made it clear that the old tricks of silencing dissent through political deals will no longer work.

    Real Representation: Who Speaks for the Youth?

    One of the most heated discussions of the session was about youth representation in governance. Time and again, the government parades handpicked youth leaders who do not represent the struggles and aspirations of young Kenyans. The system amplifies chaos and distractions while sidelining young people with real solutions.

    At MuYI, we continue to push for meaningful engagement of youth in decision-making processes. It is not enough to have young faces in government; we need leaders who will stand up for the community and challenge exploitative systems.

    Degrees vs. Leadership: Are We Being Gaslit?

    Another thought-provoking discussion centered on education and leadership. The Coffee Bar audience questioned the narrative that a degree alone makes a great leader. When President Ruto dismissed critics by stating, “I have a PhD, so I shouldn’t be questioned,” was that leadership or intellectual gatekeeping?

    Education should empower, not silence people. The session concluded that leadership should be judged by actions and policies that benefit the people, not just academic qualifications.

    The Path Forward: A New Generation of Leaders

    The Coffee Bar session left us with one conclusion: Kenyan politics is changing, and young people are driving that change. Handshakes may be signed behind closed doors, but the youth are breaking down those doors with demands for transparency, accountability, and real governance.

    Mukuru Youth Initiative (MuYI) recently hosted a thought-provoking Coffee Bar session on Tuesday, 14th January 2025, that brought together vibrant voices from the community to address pressing governance issues. The session fostered a deep, reflective conversation that not only highlighted the structural challenges facing our community but also revealed the crucial role individuals play in perpetuating these problems.

    A key consensus emerged: we are often our own biggest obstacle to progress. This realization laid the foundation for one of the most candid discussions on governance MuYI has ever facilitated, shining a light on the interplay between unity, civic education, and accountability.

    1. Divided We Fall: The Enemy Within

    A dominant theme in the discussion was the internal resistance to change. While some community members actively push for progress, others undermine these efforts due to self-interest, apathy, or external political influence.

    Participants shared personal stories of individuals tirelessly advocating for justice, accountability, and transparency, only to face sabotage from their peers. Mistrust, political manipulation, and fear of losing personal benefits were identified as major barriers to meaningful change.

    “How can we expect politicians to respect us when we don’t respect ourselves enough to unite?” one participant asked, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility.

    This lack of cohesion creates fertile ground for corruption and exploitation, as leaders can easily divide and manipulate communities to protect their interests.

    2. Overcoming Political Handouts: The Need for Civic Education

    Another critical issue raised was the pervasive culture of political handouts, which undermines community empowerment. Politicians exploit economic vulnerabilities by offering short-term financial incentives in exchange for loyalty, votes, or silence.

    Participants agreed that this cycle fosters dependency and weakens the community’s ability to demand meaningful change. The discussion highlighted the urgent need for widespread civic education to break free from this pattern.

    • Civic Awareness Campaigns: Equip residents with knowledge about their rights, leadership roles, and the importance of rejecting short-term gains for long-term accountability.

    Desh – Male, 30-40 years old, broad-shouldered and muscular – Matano’s loyal but volatile henchman. Desh is quick to anger and eager to resort to violence to protect his boss’s interests.

    Bartender (Nora’s Sister) – Female, 20-25 years old, Slim but curvy – Trapped in Matano’s web of corruption, she works as a bartender at his club, caught between fear and resignation. Despite her circumstances, she maintains a close bond with Nora and yearns for a way out.

    MC – Male or Female, 30-40 years old, any build – The charismatic host of a community concert where political tensions rise. The MC navigates the event with ease, but underlying tensions bubble up as Matano’s forces move in.

    COFFEE BAR: Behavioral psychology

    On Tuesday, October 1st, at Coffee Bar Tuesday at the MuYI Hub. A group of thirty-two young people met to discuss behavioral psychology. The discussion featured a wide range of opinions and some great points into what it means to be human and how the mind functions.

    The study of behavioural psychology focuses on how our surroundings influences our behaviour. It examines the motivations behind our activities, concentrating on routines, responses, and actions that we frequently carry out without giving them much thought. To put it plainly, it’s about realizing the motivations underlying your behaviour and determining how to adjust it as necessary.

    Big or small, we’ve all had aspects of ourselves that we’d like to improve. For some, it could be the ongoing struggle with procrastination—delaying assignments until the very last minute, even if they are aware that this is not the most efficient way to do them. Others may find it difficult to go to bed too late, even when they are aware that they should sleep more.

    The variety of human habits that behavioural psychology may help us comprehend includes talking back to people, sleep talking, and even more private behaviours like masturbation.
    A recurring problem in certain households is the so-called “black tax.” This is a reference to the belief that someone must financially assist their extended family if they reach a certain level of achievement. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but for those who are always expected to take care of others, it might cause stress, guilt, or feelings of pressure.

    Our surroundings greatly impact the things we do. A large portion of human behaviour is taught through reinforcement, which means that we are more likely to repeat an action that makes us happy or keeps us from feeling uncomfortable. As an illustration:
    • Procrastination: You may put off a chore because it will temporarily relieve your tension. According to behavioural psychology, you should make tiny, doable adjustments like segmenting activities into smaller pieces and rewarding yourself when you finish each one.
    • Staying Up Late: After a hectic day, staying up late may seem like a nice way to spend “me time”. But in the long run, this behaviour may harm your health. Developing a more calming night-time routine and rewarding yourself for going to bed sooner are two strategies suggested by behavioural psychology.

    • Talking Back: You may be reacting instinctively if you frequently respond verbally to attacks. Instead of responding defensively, behavioural strategies could assist you in pausing, taking a deep breath, and responding calmly.
    • Masturbation: Some people may wish to break the practice of masturbating less frequently. Behavioural psychology can assist in identifying habit-forming triggers, such as stress or boredom, and in substituting the habit with an alternative activity that produces comparable emotions of diversion or relaxation.
    • Black Tax: A person’s psyche and pocketbook may be greatly burdened by this societal expectation. Behavioural psychology may assist you in establishing limits or changing your perspective. Your part in supporting your family, making it seem more like a decision and less like a duty. It can be difficult to manage black tax as a firstborn daughter, particularly when trying to strike a balance between family expectations and personal financial objectives but there are useful strategies such as:
    1. Establish Limits Early
    • Express Yourself Clearly: Tell your relatives about your financial predicament. Tell them what you can actually do to help without endangering your own objectives.
    • Set Boundaries: Decide on a monthly contribution amount that you can afford to make, then stick to it. Refrain from giving more than you can afford due to pressure.

    2. Give personal goals and self-care first priority.
    • Save for Yourself: It’s critical to put your personal financial security ahead of that of others. Make sure you have assets, retirement contributions, and emergency funds.

    COFFEE BAR: Basic etiquette practices and culture shock in Kenya

    We had our Coffee Bar Tuesday at the MuYI Hub on Tuesday, September 24th. Thirty-four youths convened to talk about culture and basic etiquette. The talk had a wide range of viewpoints, contentious debates, and some perceptive observations on what it means to be of a certain tribe in the modern world, particularly in Kenya, as was to be expected.

    Kenya is a diverse nation with more than 40 distinct ethnic tribes, each with its own traditions and customs. Knowing the subtle cultural differences is essential

    Maasai-if you belong to the same generation or age bracket one can exchange wives and you have to stick your spear outside the house.

    If your mother’s dowry was a certain amount you have to give out the same amount for your dowry
    luhya-if a corpse does not cooperate during its burial and its above 25 years one is beaten until it cries.

    Kisii-coffins are stepped on after burial and when specific birds come around you home it shows that people will soon mourn the death of someone close to them.

    Although culture shock is a typical experience, you may simply adjust and handle social interactions by knowing a few basic etiquettes.

    1. Recognizing Kenyan Culture Shock The disorienting sensation that people frequently get when they come across strange habits and behaviors is known as “culture shock.”

    Language obstacles, greeting customs, differing clothing rules, and divergent perspectives on time and personal space can all contribute to this in Kenya. Here are few instances:

    Language Diversity: Of Kenyans, 68 languages are spoken, with English and Swahili being the most widely spoken. However, many Kenyans are bilingual and frequently transition between languages during conversation.
    Social Structures: In contrast to more individualistic cultures, many Kenyan villages have a strong foundation in patriarchy and community living.
    Religious Diversity: The widespread practice of Christianity, Islam, and indigenous religions affects everyday routines and societal expectations.
    It can be difficult to adjust to these differences, but it can be made simpler by realizing the underlying respect for tradition and community.

    2. Important Protocols for All Kenyan Tribes
    Every Kenyan tribe has distinct social practices, despite certain common things.

    The following are some crucial manners to remember:
    Etiquette for Greetings
    In Kenya, greeting someone is seen as a show of respect, though this differs throughout tribes:
    Swahili Communities (Coastal Kenya): Although gentle bows are not uncommon, especially from elders, handshakes are the norm. Saying “Habari” (how are you?) or “Jambo” (hello) to someone is courteous.
    Maasai: As an age-old sign of respect, a handshake is frequently exchanged during greetings among the Maasai, who may also lightly spit on the hand.
    Kikuyu: Giving someone a firm handshake by putting both of your hands together conveys warmth and sincerity.

    Clothes Code and Etiquette
    Respect is shown by dressing adequately, with regional standards varying:
    Urban Areas: While Nairobi and other cities tend to be more liberal, modest clothing is still valued, particularly in official or religious contexts.
    Muslim communities and rural areas: Women are often encouraged to wear modest clothing, covering their arms and legs, especially locations like the Coast.
    Maasai: Shukas, or vibrantly coloured clothing, are historically worn by Maasai men and women. You might see ornate jewelry when you come, particularly on women. Respect their traditional garb and, if in doubt, wear something modest.
    Individual space and Conversation
    most Kenyans have differences in their personal space and directness:
    Kamba and Kikuyu: Individuals in these cultures converse warmly and closely, occasionally embracing or touching arms. Being extremely formal or aloof could come out as unwelcoming.
    Somali Kenyans: While handshakes are frequent among Somali Kenyans, unless they are related, men and women typically avoid making physical contact in public. In particular, eye contact between men and women may be fleeting.
